Metamorphic Rock Formation

Sedimentary and igneous rocks may undergo severe pressure and heat as parts of the crust move, fold, thrust deeper under ground, or are buried under lava flows. This may cause physical and chemical changes in the rocks (the word metamorphic means "changed in form" In this activity we will make a model of how these rocks are formed.

Procedure
1. Use different colors of crayons to represent igneous rocks.
2. Shave the crayons with the edge of a pair of scissors to represent the breaking down of igneous rocks into sediment.
3. Place the shavings into a piece of aluminum foil to represent burying
the sediment deeper into the Earth's crust.
4. Place a book on top of the foil and press to represent pressure
forming a sedimentary rock.
5. Take a look at your sedimentary rock and then replace it into the foil.
Now heat the foil over a candle and press with the book again. This
represents heat and pressure changing the rock into a metamorphic
rock.

Draw a picture of your crayon rocks at the different stages.
Igneous ----------------sedimentary-----------------metamorphic
