PRE SCIENCE CARNIVAL
MAP
The map will aid students and outside presenters in locating activities. When all the activities have been planned then choose the location of each activity. Draw a map of your school and place the names of each activity on the map where they belong. The map will also serve to advertise each event so be creative and make it look fun. Run off enough copies to post in strategic locations around the school. Post these a few days before the event. Try to have a good mix of indoor and outdoor activity locations.
SIGNS
Have each class design a sign for the event that
is going to be held in or around their classroom. A day or two
before the carnival post the signs at the events. By doing it
ahead of time students will have a chance to learn where the events
are going to be held. This will help the flow of kid traffic on
the day.
STUDENT HELPERS
Get students involved in as much of the set up as possible. Posting maps and signs is a great job for student helpers. Assemble a student helpers crew for the day of the carnival.
PARENT HELPERS
Parent volunteers can also assist in the physical set-up and event documentation.
EQUIPMENT
Make sure that any equipment needed is available and working for the day of the carnival. The person on the committee reponsible for data and communications should have a list of the needs of the presenters. Distribute the equipment for inside presentations before the day. Equipment for outside presentations will have to be set up in the morning before school.
ON THE DAY
RECEPTION TABLE
Come to school early. Set up a reception table operated by at least two parent volunteers. On the table you should have a map, a list of presenters, activities with locations, and a box of name tags of the presenters and volunteers. The receptionists will check off arriving presenters, hand out name tags, and direct the presenters to their locations.
EQUIPMENT
Distribute any equipment needed for outside activities, tables, rope and cones for roping off areas if neccessary, extension cords, etc. Stand buy to help presenters with their set ups. One school had a glider airplane set up on the feild for their science carnival. The presenter needed some help in assembling the airplane.
EVENT DOCUMENTATION
Assign a couple of parent volunteers to take photographs and video. It's great to have documentation for school newsletters, web pages, and the year's accomplishments.
POST SCIENCE CARNIVAL
Break it down and CLEAN UP. Put your school back together again.
